Who is Dr. Harlen Tarbell? He was an American magician who is best known for writing the Tarbell Course in Magic, one of the most popular magic textbooks ever published. The course was first released in 1928 and went through eight editions, teaching generations of magicians how to perform incredible illusions. Tarbell was also a highly successful performer, winning numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. Early Life

Tarbell was born on October 31, 1869, in the small town of Delavan, Illinois. His father was a doctor and his mother was a schoolteacher. Tarbell was an intelligent and curious child, and he quickly took to magic after seeing a traveling magician perform at a county fair when he was just eight years old. After that fateful day, he began devouring everything he could find on magic. He saved up his allowance and bought magic books and tricks whenever he could. By the time he turned sixteen, he had already performed his first professional show!

Professional Career

Tarbell’s passion for magic led him to pursue a career in the performing arts. He studied acting and directing at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. He also took up ventriloquism and started touring the country with his act. His hard work paid off and he soon became one of the most successful magicians in America. In addition to his stage shows, Tarbell also performed on radio and television. He even wrote, directed, and starred in his own film called The Miracle Man!

Awards and Achievements

What were some of Tarbell’s achievements in the magic community? Aside from writing the Tarbell Course in Magic, he was also an accomplished performer, lecturer, and author. He won numerous awards throughout his career, including the prestigious Gold Cups from both the Society of American Magicians and The International Brotherhood of Magicians. He was also named “Magician of the Year” by both organizations on multiple occasions. In addition, he served as president of both organizations on multiple occasions.

Tarbell was also inducted into the Academy of Magical Arts Hall of Fame and the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame.

Dr. Tarbell’s Legacy
